![]() Raffles at Cannock and Stafford meetings There is a Young Athletes League meeting at Cannock on Sunday July 17, a Young Athletes League meeting at Stafford on Sunday July 31 and a Junior League meeting at Cannock on Sunday July 24. We will be holding raffles at each of the meetings and any prizes would be gratefully received. They can be handed to any committee members at Cannock and Stafford. The more prizes we have the more funds we can generate for the club. Hire of Cannock Stadium With a view to giving athletes a better environment in which to meet, warm up and train – and hopefully to bring in more money to the club – we will be hiring the whole of Cannock Stadium on Tuesday and Thursday nights from Tuesday July 5 2005. This will mean athletes will pay their entry fee for the night directly to the club (there will be a desk and signing-in book in reception). We will have full use of the whole of the stadium, including the two rooms upstairs. We plan to sell refreshments to athletes/coaches and parents from the kitchen in the main room. ALL ATHLETES WHO ARE PAID-UP MEMBERS WILL BENEFIT CONSIDERABLY FROM THIS WHEN PAYING THEIR ENTRY FEES. A full breakdown of the charges will be circulated before July 5. Subscriptions There are still many subscriptions outstanding for the 2004/05 year. Athletes should be aware that they need to be members of Cannock & Stafford AC to compete in championships and to ensure they are properly covered by insurance. Please pay your fees NOW – it is only fair on your fellow athletes. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. |

![]() Full Results The young athletes of Cannock and Stafford Athletic completed their final West Midland League meeting and there were some excellent performances with individual and team medals. Under 15 athlete Chris Harvey was in splendid form throughout the four league meetings finishing second in every one being beaten on each occasion by his main midland rival Greg Dival of Royal Sutton Coldfield so with the latter taking the gold medal it was Harvey who took an excellent silver medal. Team mate Ian McCann had his best run of the season finishing a good ninth place. Rachel Atherton was another athlete taking the silver medal in the under 13 girls event and with each race producing a different winner it was the C&S runner who won the final meeting but overall she had to settle for silver behind her main rival Monique Powell of RSC. The under 13 girls team were also in the medals but going into this final meeting they were lying in fourth place thirteen points behind Birchfield Harriers but great team work saw the them lift themselves up in to third place finishing the league just three points ahead of the Birmingham team. Giving Atherton good support were Becky Cooke 26th, Hollie Allan 30th, Chloe Boulter 36th, Rebecca Bray 41st, Ellise Cookson 44th, Zoe Tomkins 50th and Anna Denning 80th. The under 15 girls went one better as they took a brilliant second team spot behind Sutton Coldfield with Cally Read finishing in third place on the day and sixth overall and with good backing from Siobhan Arms 6th, Emma Gore 10th, Emma Wagstaffe 19th, Jade Lepla 22nd, Jill Cash 29th and Kirsty Kelsall 45th they finished worthy runners up well clear of third place. The five runners in the under 13 boys were seventh overall with good runs from Aden Symonds 7th, Jack Hammond 25th, Tom Newman 30th, Adam Trimbrell 46th and Alistair Rigby 56th. The under 11 girls also finished seventh with Alexandra Liddiard 33rd, Paige Greening 65th, Shanie Read 67th, Beth Denning 69th, Esme Ferneyhough 77th, Becky Colclough 80th and Katie Gray 82nd. ![]() Athletes from Cannock and Stafford Athletic Club contested the first major championships of the season when they travelled to Birmingham to compete in the National AAAs at Cofton Park. With almost three hundred runners in most of the races there were some outstanding performances from several of the club athletes and some splendid team performances. The under fifteen boys had the best showing on the day with Staffs champion and Midland bronze medallist Chris Harvey narrowly missing out on a national medal finishing in fourth place. Always in contention during the first lap the second lap saw two athletes break away so coming into the final straight there were three athletes all battling for the final medal position and although Harvey saw off the challenge of one of the opponents he had to give way to Sutton Coldfield Greg Dival who also beat him by one place in the Midlands. The team also took an excellent eighth place with good support coming from Sam Evans in 70th Ian McCann 120th and Glyn Owens in 124th. The under 13 girls finished a creditable 22nd with Rachel Atherton crossing the line in a superb 20th with Chloe Boulter 170th, Hollie Allan 175th, Zoe Tomkins 199th, Ellise Cookson 217th and Rebecca Bray 241st. The under 15 girls also ran well finishing 17th with Cally Read 38th, Siobhan Arms 96th, Jade Lepla 164th, Jill Cash 176th and Emma Hunt 199th. The senior men had one athlete competing in a race of over a thousand runners and Chris Powner in his first year as a senior did not disgrace himself with an outstanding effort crossing the line in 42nd place. ![]() On Sunday 16th Jan the Midland Veterans cross-country championships were held at Birchfield and we had two gold medals to report, Christine Kilkenny won gold in the W50 age group and Dot Fellows took gold in the W60 group. In a field of over 30 runners both had many younger athletes behind them with Chris finishing 7th overall and Dot 14th. For the first time in many years we failed to field a team at this championship. On Friday 21st Jan the North Staffs Road Running Association held their presentation evening and Dot picked up one of the major awards when she was presented with the Veteran Lady Runner of the year award for 2004, this was in recognition of her finishing the season in 6th place in the league even though she has now turned 60. There were also awards for Jeanne Bryan, Gillian Russon and Gill Caldwell. Not for publication on the web but Gill Caldwells husband Ron passed away on the day of the presentation and will be missed in road racing circles, He had completed 22 London marathons 19 of them with Gill and has been a long standing member of our club. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. |

In the field only one of our athletes finished out of the first two and we had victories for Anne Wainwright in the pole vault Alison George in the shot and Carol Lowndes achieved a Discus/Javelin double. In the Boys 13-14 Chris Harvey ran a splendid race finishing in the top ten in ninth place in a time of 14 minutes and 14 seconds followed by Sam Evans in 53rd (15.21) and Miles Rowley 63rd in a time of 15.44. The Boys 15-17 race had James Trollope recording an excellent time of 14.30 crossing the line in 56tth place. The Girls had four C&S runners who all ran exceptionally well with Cally Read finishing 17th in a time of 17.08 with clubmate and training partner Rachel Atherton one second behind in 19th place. These two were then followed in by Rebecca Cooke in 35th (17.34) and Sophie Faulkner 76th in a time of 20.46. The girls 13-14 saw three C&S girls with Jill Cash crossing the line in a creditable 31st place in 16.52 with Emma Gore 46th (17.24) who in turn was followed by Siobhan Arms in 69th in a time of 17.58. The Girls 15-17 had one club runner in the ranks with Emily Upton flying the flag for C&S and she also performed well crossing the line in 70th place with a splendid time of 18.07. All of the C&S athletes
showed great determination and gave a good team performance for their
county.
With ten runners from each school consisting of five girls and five boys
there was some excellent performances shown by many of the The final
placings were: First leg runner was Chris Harvey in his first year as an under 15 but he produced a splendid time of 12.50 to cross the line in fifth place handing over to another first year under 15 athlete Sam Evans who despite dropping to twelfth place still did a good time of 13.52.
Stacey Johnson proved she is still one of the top under 17 girls in the country when running on her own for the club she produced a brilliant time of 13.54 which was ten seconds faster than the second best time. Making the performance even more incredible was the fact that during her leg there was a ferocious storm that almost blew the C&S tent over.
Going off on the third was first year athlete was Rachel Atherton who took one more place to finish in a splendid sixth. With the powerful Aldershot Farnham & District (winners of all three age groups) finishing their `B` team in fifth place the under 13s were actually fifth club finishers. Their performance showed again that C&S can hold their own and take on the bigger clubs in the country.

INTER
COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Athletes from Cannock and Stafford Athletic Club performed well last weekend when they represented Staffordshire at the Inter County Championships in at Wollaton Park in Nottingham.
Junior international Tom Humphries who is still an under 20 athlete under U.K. Athletics rules had to compete in his first major championships as a senior because these championships which are also the Trials for the World Championships are held under I.A.A.F. rules.
Packed with top senior runners from all over the country hoping to gain an automatic slot for the worlds it was a tall order for Humphries but he showed no signs of being overwhelmed by his much older opposition as he kept with the leading runners for the first two of the three lap race and it was only on the third and final lap did the older runners start to move away but he stuck to his task and he crossed the line in an excellent 15th place ahead of many well known British runners.
In the under 15 Boys Staffordshire collected their first ever team victory at this age group and it was C&S athlete James Trollope who returned in 26th place to take the third scorers spot for the County to earn himself a well deserved Gold team award.
. Just missing out on a medal himself was fifth place runner for Staffs. Adam Watkins who performed really well considering he cam out at the back of the starting pen behind his seven teammates.
In the under 13 girls Emma Gore retuned in a respectable 40th place followed by team mate Cally Read in 94th and Rachel Atherton 126th.
The under 13 boys had two C&S runners with Zac Leason finishing a worthy 118th while Adam Smith finished in a splendid 140th.to help the team finish in 14th place.
The Staffordshire under 15 girls team
performed really well finishing in second overall place with Jill Cash running
well for 101st and Stephanie Jones-Ridgeway in 150th
The
under 17 ladies had one C-S athlete with Jo Harper finishing second scorer in

10th in a time of 8:03:88. The first 4 qualified automatically and the
5th, 6th and 7th place athletes also qualified as fastest losers. The photo finish
below shows how close the race was, with only 29 hundredths of a second in
between 2nd and 6th place. During the race, athletes achieved two national

WEST
MIDLANDS YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE
PERRY PARK BIRMINGHAM 29-02-2004
The under 11 girls of Cannock and Stafford Athletic Club were celebrating last weekend when they competed in the final round of the West Midland Young Athletes League at Perry Park in Birmingham coming away with an excellent third place in the team awards.
With trophies for the first six there was a splendid fourth place individual award for Rowley Park athlete Becky Cooke who despite finishing sixth on the day had done enough in the earlier rounds to enable her to keep her fourth spot.
The
team went into this final round in third place just ahead of fourth place but a
solid performance saw them remain in third with Cooke receiving good support
from Jourdanna Beresford-Smith in 11th, Becky Philips 21st, Rebecca Bray 23rd,
Dannielle Finlay 28th, Sophie Bales 48th, Daisy Perry 49th and Fay
Al-Nakeeb 52nd.
Another athlete achieving a trophy was Rachel Atherton in the under 13 girls with several good performances over the five rounds which earned her an excellent fifth place overall.

NATIONAL
CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
TEMPLE NEWSAM PARK, LEEDS 21-02-04
Cannock and Stafford Athletic Club had a highly enjoyable time, when they travelled to Leeds to contest the National Cross Country Championships, which were held, at Temple Newsam Park in Leeds.
Although
only one medal was achieved, an individual, there were several good team
performances that shows that C&S, which is made up solely of local runners
as compared to the clubs that buy in athletes, can proudly say that it puts them
up with many of the country’s more wealthier clubs.
Inevitable
it was junior international Tom Humphries who is in his second year of three in
the under twenty race that the individual medal came and it was no disgrace to
be beaten by Liverpool’s Phil McGlory who is in his final year in this age
group.
On
a course of two laps each covering four thousand metres the C&S youngster
moved quickly to the front of the pack with McGlory the only athlete to respond
to Toms pace.
By
the end of the first lap the Liverpool runner had made a six second gap and
although he tried to increase his lead he could not make any headway but neither
could Humphries make any impression on the deficit and with these two well clear
of the rest it stayed that way to the finish line.
With
a bronze place last year and silver this time, it is hoped that next year he can
take the gold medal to add to his under seventeen title.
The
only two other runners for C&S in the under twenties were Chris Powner 75th,
(35.50) and Ben Taylor 122nd, (38.18)
The
under 15 boys who were third in the Midland Champs produced an outstanding
performance finishing fifth overall with James Trollope crossing the line in 22nd
place in a time of 14.54, followed by Adam Watkins 35th, (15.08),
Chris Harvey 49th, (15,22), Miles Rowley 102nd, (15.52),
Glyn Owens 121st, (16.04), Sam Evans 142nd, (16.19), Ian
McCann 247th, (17.26), and Liam Faherty 256th, (17.34)
The
under 13 boys also finished fifth overall and again splendid efforts were made
by Alex Barnfather in 43rd, (11.28) Zac Leason 47th,
(1.32) Adam Smith 77th (11.46) Aiden Symonds 111th,
(12.02) Stuart Millage 187th (12.51) and Craig Jones-Ridgeway 243rd
(13.52).
The
under 13 girls were another team in good form finishing an excellent ninth
overall with Emma Gore leading the way for C&S in 19th, (12.11),
Cally Read 35th, (12.34), Rachel Atherton 43rd, (12.40)
and Sophie Faulkner 197th (14.07).
The
under 15 girls finished in creditable 17th place with fine runs from
Jill Cash in 75th, (17.48), Stephanie Jones-Ridgeway 105th,
(18.11), Emma Hunt 167th, (18.54), Siobhan Arms 176th
(19.04) and Jade Lepla 192nd (19.21).
Incomplete
teams were the under 17 Ladies with Stacey Johnson 20th, (21.09) Jo
Harper 25th, (21.31) and Emily Upton 105th, (24.00), the
under seventeen men, Toby Norman 140th,(25.15),Jon Bevington 164th,(25.50)
and James Houghton 174 (26.05).
Lisa
Knight despite problems progressing from young athlete to senior, showed much
improved form in the under twenties to finish 52nd in a time of
21.57.
There
was one senior man taking part being Craig Pearson who finished in a field of
almost two thousand competitors.

BIRMINGHAM
& DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE
BURBAGE COMMON, NUNEATON, 07-02-04
The senior men of Cannock and Stafford Athletic Club were celebrating, when the
club won promotion from the Second Division of the Birmingham League to the
First which will give them the opportunity of competing against the top teams in
the Midlands next season for the first time in seven years.
After successive relegations from the second to the fourth due to the lack of
senior runners their rise back to the top was just as dramatic as they climbed
from the fourth to the first with great determination and great team work
consisting of young athletes and experienced senior athletes.
With the top three teams being promoted it was always going to be difficult for
C& S but with good efforts in the first three rounds they found themselves
in fourth place entering the final round at Nuneaton.
Telford and Cheltenham were both out in front following good performances as
several of their international athletes had given them a big margin over the
first three rounds so the real battle was for third place with Severn A.C.
holding a seventy three point lead over C&S going into this match.
From the start junior international Tom Humphries and Telford`s senior
international Chris Davies moved quickly away from the pack staying together for
the first two laps when the more stronger Davies moved himself into a
comfortable lead crossing the line twenty seconds ahead of Humphries.
Behind these two the rest of the C&S athletes were in determined form to try
and reverse the points tally with Severn and finishing in an excellent fifth
place was fellow junior athlete Rob Little followed by seniors Paul Lester in
fourteenth and Craig Pearson in 26th.
The next two scorers were more juniors with Chris Powner in thirty sixth and Ben
Taylor in forty eighth and with veterans Brian Peacock in 103rd and Tim Buss
150th the team had a sixteen point lead over Severn which gave them the required
total needed o enable them to return to the top flight.
With Humphries not able to compete in all of the rounds due to international
appearances Rob Little took the leading junior athletes gold medal with Chris
Powner taking the bronze with Ben Taylor just missing out in fourth place.
