It is with sadness that the club has learnt of the death of Nigel Bailey. Nigel was instrumental in the amalgamation of the Cannock and Stafford athletic clubs in 1986.
He carried out just about every role during his time with the club. He served as coach, technical official and team manager as well as club secretary and chairman.
Nigel's funeral will be held on Wednesday 18th December at St Luke's Church in Cannock. The service will begin at 12.30.

2024 has been a successful one for both the Club and its athletes as individuals.
In team competition, the cross country season is in full flow and, at the time of writing, our Senior Men are topping Division 2 in both the Birmingham and District and the North Staffs Cross Country Leagues so they have a chance of a double promotion.
Unfortunately, we are still woefully short of senior female middle / long distance runners which has highlighted itself in both cross country and track and field. We really need to improve this area. If someone was able and willing to pull together a small training group, it would give others incentive to join and we may be able to push on from there.
On the track, there was a pleasing increase in the number of lads progressing from U15 to U17 which resulted in almost twice as many male athletes taking part in the Upper YDL fixtures compared to 2023. This led to us winning our division, although we missed out on promotion after taking part in a paper match.
The number of U13/U15 athletes competing for the club this year was almost identical to last and we just missed out on winning our division again after finishing level on league points with RSC but having less match points overall. The Development Group continue to attract more athletes than we can currently cope with. This is not only a ‘nice problem’ at our club but seems to be a regional issue, with most, if not all, local clubs being in the same situation.
Our Senior League team did really well to finish fourth in Division 2 in the Midlands League, despite a couple of long trips to away meetings. Birchfield and Tamworth were both in our division and both were relegated to the ‘Regional’ divisions for next season which gives some indication as to how we performed.
Once again, the Senior League meetings have been great for the development of our younger athletes with a number of our first year U17 athletes taking part and getting the chance to compete against stronger opposition than they get in the younger age group leagues.
At Veterans level, both our Men’s and Women’s teams retained their Midland Veterans League North Division titles. Once again, congratulations to the athletes and well done to Craig Pearson and Rob Law who managed the men’s team and Emma Hollinshead who organised the women.
Over the season, there were also a number of C&S athletes who achieved individual success. I apologise if I have missed anyone out. I’ve tried to mention all achievements at area level or above.
We’ve had six new age group club records. Finlay Stanton achieved three of these in the U13B 800, 1200 and 1500m, Callum Pearson broke the U15B 800m record, Georgia Griffiths ran a new steeplechase best and Joyella Jeffries equalled the U17W 400m record.
We also had a number of Masters club records broken and John Kirby broke the Irish Masters 200m record by running 22.42 seconds at the Irish Senior Championships in Dublin.
Callum Pearson won bronze at the National Indoor Championships in the JB 800m and we had two medal winners at the English Schools Track and Field Championships with Callum taking bronze again in the JB 800m and Georgia Griffiths silver in the IG steeplechase. For that performance, Georgia earned the chance to represent English Schools in the SIAB International in Wales. She also followed this with a silver at the National Championships in the same event.
Thomas Stephens, Ben Allen, Jack Hadley, Matilda Perry, Sophie Hulse, Joyella Jeffries and Mia Wainwright also represented Staffordshire in the event at Alexander Stadium and Ben Allen, Jack Hadley, Brandan Smart, Charlie Cresswell, Beth Beeson and Georgia Griffiths were selected by Staffordshire Schools for the English Schools Cross Country Championships in Pontefract.
Malcolm Eustace, Malcolm Down, Darrell Wilde, Sue Kneill-Boxley, John Kirby and Keri Lees won medals at BMAF T&F Championships and Malcolm Eustace and Christine Kilkenny medals at the BMAF Cross Country Championships.
Nina Skilton was selected and competed for England in the W55 age group in the British and Irish Masters Cross Country International in Belfast and Sue Kneill-Boxley was chosen and raced as a reserve. Malcolm Eustace was also selected but had to withdraw due to injury.
At the Midlands Cross Country Championships, there were medals for Finlay Stanton and our U15B team and in Midlands Track & Field Championships, Matilda Perry, Larna Watkins, Joyella Jeffries, Sophie Hulse, Alfie Blackett, Georgia Griffiths, Ben Allen, Callum Pearson, James McCann and Ryan Ashforth all won medals.
As I said, it’s been a successful season!
Finally, I’d like to give the biggest thank you to all our volunteers who have helped in coaching, officiating, managing and running all of our teams and carrying out the administration of the Club. I really don’t think that some people realise how much time and effort these individuals give, for no payment, so that all of our athletes can enjoy the sport. That’s why a simple “thank you” at the end of each training session or competition to coaches or officials is so important to show your appreciation.
I hope you all have a happy and healthy Christmas and a successful New Year.

England Athletics are ploughing ahead with the controversial changes to competition age groups after narrowly winning a vote at a Special General Meeting which was forced by a group of clubs and bodies opposed to the proposals.
Despite proactively campaigning to push their idea of changing the age groups by emailing all clubs asking for their support in the vote, England Athletics only received 53% with 47% of clubs, leagues and area bodies voting against our Governing Body.
The changes were pushed through by the Home Country Athletics Federations after extremely limited consultation with clubs, athletes, parents or coaches and are due to come into force in April 2026.

Please read this item and DON’T IGNORE as it contains important information.
At each league meeting (YDLs, Senior League, Vet’s League) our club has to provide officials for field events and track judges and timekeepers. This duty has been undertaken by, pretty much, the same small group of officials for a number of years now. However, due to illness, retirement or changes in circumstances, we are now left with only an extremely limited number of qualified officials to fulfil our requirements.
We therefore now urgently need a number of parents, athletes or coaches to qualify and help officiate at the club’s meetings. I know the easy option is to leave it to ‘someone else’ but ‘someone else’ may be thinking exactly the same as you!
If we are not in a position where we are able to fulfil our requirements at the meetings then we may well find ourselves being thrown out of the leagues in which we compete.
We are not asking for a massive commitment. Ideally what we are looking for is around 6 people to qualify as field officials, two track judges and two timekeepers – more would be great. If we can achieve this then duties can be shared to suit when you are available at the meetings you are already at.
The sport is in great need of officials. Without officials, athletes will be unable to compete so you can help. England Athletics have recognised this and have made qualifying easier than it was previously. You can read how to qualify at https://www.englandathletics.org/coaches-and-officials/officiating-journey/ but, basically, you do an online course, health and safety modules, complete a DBS and upload a photo – simple!
The Club will pay any course fees after you have passed and helped out at your first meeting so it won’t cost you anything, just a little of your time.
You never know, you might enjoy it and want to progress up the officiating ladder but the main thing at the moment is being able to help YOUR club out.
If you are willing to help, please let me know.

The ECCA have announced that the National Cross Country Championships, due to be held tomorrow at Weston Park, have been postponed. Their statement reads:-
"The ECCA very much regret to announce that despite every effort possible being made, we are unable to hold the National Championships at Weston Park on Saturday.
Thursday saw torrential rain for many hours, and much of the Park including parking areas are underwater. Falling on already saturated ground, this made conditions impossible for parking.
We have spent the last 24 hours exploring every possible alternative, but we have not been able to solve the parking issues.
We will now explore all possible options, to hold our Championships at a suitable future date.
We sincerely apologise for all the logistical and financial problems that this will cause to Clubs and individuals.
Further announcements will be made as soon as we can do so with any certainty"
